Summary of the Positon

We are looking to recruit a suitable individual to undertake the role of Activities coordinator. We are looking for an Activities Coordinator with creative flare and out-of-the box thinking to organise and run events and activities for our residents. You must be knowledgeable, experienced and essentially equipped with good socialising, communication and personal skills in order to take on the responsibilities of this role. You will be integral in organising and providing a varied and appropriate programme of therapeutic and meaningful activities for our residents.

The role will be based across all specialist areas in our organisation, which include Continuing Care Service, Ventilator Unit, Brain Injury Services and Neuro-behavioural service. You would be responsible for providing activities and interact with residents and family members for across the entire organisation.  You will be responsible for supervising and supporting volunteers who provide their time to the RHN helping with various activities including large group activities and 1:1 befriending. 

Ideally, we would love someone to embrace this role and make it their own with ideas and initiatives for improvement and patient centred care.

The role is unique as it combines activities coordination; providing a service to residents that caters for their social and emotional wellbeing on the wards as well as larger groups and events for residents across the entire organisation. In addition, this role would also have administrative duties pertaining to additional resident and family services we offer which include hairdressing service, aquarium maintenance, family accommodation, referring to and liaising with the legal and welfare services. 

Summary of the RHN

The RHN is an independent hospital and medical charity. We care for people who have brain injuries and require assessment, rehabilitation and disability management for conditions such as Huntington’s disease and prolonged disorders of consciousness. Our specialist services include a ventilator unit and a neuro-behavioural unit.

We help those with the most complex of health needs and disabilities including degenerative or progressive conditions as well as providing palliative care. The patients we support usually have complex physical challenges alongside their neuro-disability. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills by working across all services to learn new skills and will be working in a strong team of professionals.

Main Objectives of the role

  • Demonstrate an awareness of RHN’s values and contribute to achieving them appropriately.
  • To create a stimulating and varied programme of therapeutic leisure activities and social events for residents to enjoy.
  • To facilitate ward based group and individual therapeutic activities.
  • To help run group larger group activities that take place in our main assembly room.
  • To provide resources and ideas to ward staff for group and 1-1 social events.
  • To work with new resident/family to understand their likes/dislikes, abilities and needs to create a personalised therapeutic leisure program.
  • To work as a member of a team with support in planning, organising and providing a program of therapeutic leisure activities.
  • Interact with relatives and or visitors either in person or by telephone.  Ensure they are aware of upcoming events.
  • Develop and maintain activity notice boards/ward communication boards.  Liaise with the Communications Team for support to ensure these boards remain up to date.
  • To keep our communications team informed of any special events within the organisation so they can assist with advertising to residents, families and staff.
  • Supporting the wards to ensure key lifestyle hobbies and interests are embedded and celebrated, such as resident, staff and family birthday parties, anniversaries and any National or Global event themes that we can adopt and celebrate on the wards.
  • Maintain record keeping/ timetables of events for residents to evidence the activities and events that take place on the wards and across the wider organisation.
  • Supervise and Support volunteers to participate and engage in running group activities and other 1:1 patient/resident sessions.

Person specification: Essential and Desirable

Essential

  • A drive and enthusiasm for supporting residents in pursuing activities that promote social integration and emotional wellbeing.
  • Basic understanding of communication difficulties in brain injury and stroke and the impact upon the patient.
  • Educated to a standard which ensures excellent literacy and numeracy (GCSE/O Level Maths and English)
  • Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience of working with adults with a disability either in health, social or educational setting
  • Willingness to undertake training as required.
  • Able to respond flexibly to changing situation, prioritise appropriately and deal calmly with unexpected events or difficult situations. 
  • Innovative, able to work autonomously and take responsibility appropriately. 
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with patient, family, multi-disciplinary team and with other professionals.
  • Competent IT skills.

Desirable

  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in a related subject i.e. Health and social care.
  • Experience in working with individuals with complex needs and supporting them to live full and active lives
  • Evidence of being able to work effectively in teams.
