Overall purpose of the role:

The Assistant Principal will play a vital role as a member of the School’s SLT, strategically leading all aspect of culture, including line managing key staff, as well as being a key contributor the rest of the work of the school. The successful candidate will have the skills to contribute to the development of teaching, learning and assessment at the academy, demonstrating a thorough and current knowledge of theory and practice as well as an understanding of evidence-based research and coaching.

Essential Criteria

Education:

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Recent and Relevant CPD
  • Qualified to degree level or above

Experience:

  • Substantial school leadership experience
  • Successful experience of teaching at key stages 3 and 4
  • Track record of raising standards in or across departments / school
  • Understanding of what outstanding teaching practice looks like

Knowledge and understanding:

  • An excellent understanding of strategies to develop effective personal development, culture and ethos with both staff and students
  • Deep knowledge of what constitutes effective teaching and learning
  • Experience of using a range of tools and evidence, including data, to evaluate the effectiveness of learning and teaching, challenge underperformance, and target issues.
  • Knowledge of current educational policy and initiatives
  • Demonstrable professionalism and sense of responsibility.

Skills:

  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Ability to evaluate the quality of pupils’ progress using a range of evidence
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor colleagues effectively
  • Good organisational skills
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Proven ability to establish productive and collaborative working relationships with staff
  • Excellent management skills e.g. an ability to lead a team, motivate others, effectively develop staff, hold staff to account
  • Proven ability to establish productive professional relationships with children, and parents
  • Resilience to manage one’s own work pressure and to capacity to manage effectively the work of others
  • Willingness to share expertise, skills and knowledge and ability to encourage others to follow suit
