Summary of position
We have an exciting vacancy available for an experienced and motivated physiotherapist with proven clinical and leadership skills to join the Physiotherapy team at the RHN. This post is primarily based in the Level 1a Brain Injury Service (BIS), which provides intensive specialist neuro-rehabilitation and complex disability management for patients with acquired brain injury. The post holder will work within a strong interdisciplinary team, providing patient centred specialist assessment and treatment on our rehabilitation and disorders of consciousness pathways. The post holder will also apply excellent leadership to both the local physiotherapy team and in a broader capacity within the IDT.

Main Objectives of the role
- Undertake a team leader role, alongside the Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, in planning and co-ordinating the delivery of the physiotherapy service in the designated clinical area on a day-to-day basis
- To provide supervisory support for the Senior II Physiotherapist and therapy support staff working in the Neuro-Behavioural and Huntington’s Disease services and the wider clinical area within the Physiotherapy department.
- To demonstrate effective working as part of the Neuro-Behavioural Services transdisciplinary team, to uphold patient values and orientation towards their goals.
- To demonstrate an awareness of RHN’s objectives and values and contribute to achieving them appropriately.
- To strive to improve efficiency and effectiveness in all areas of your work.
- To ensure professionalism and excellent communication with staff, patients and relatives in routine and complex circumstances, including holding difficult conversations.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake this leadership role alongside the IDT, conducting a regular evaluation of the physiotherapy service in the designated clinical area, evaluating the physiotherapy provision and optimising effectiveness and efficiency.
- Undertake comprehensive assessments of patients with complex neuro-disability, using advanced clinical reasoning skills and assessment techniques, interpreting and analysing clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in order to recommend the best course of intervention
- Hold clinical responsibility for a specific caseload, organising this effectively and efficiently with regard to service requirements, clinical priorities and use of time.
- Oversee the physiotherapy provision for the clinical caseload in the designated clinical area.
- Deputise for the Clinical lead Physiotherapist as required.
- Implement a values based goals/objectives setting approach, placing the patients at the centre of their treatment programs.
- To maintain work cohesively with other RHN and external professions, to facilitate a seamless patient experience through the BIS pathway (inclusive of pre-admission and discharge processes).
- To collaboratively support the IDT to plan patient programs on a daily and weekly basis to ensure they are equitably accessing their required services.
- To be aware of and comply with all additional mandatory training.
- To effectively respond to and manage clinical risk within own case load, and support fellow team members in their decision making.
- Take on a key worker and team chair roles as required.
- To work innovatively and flexibly; willingly adapt clinical practice and approaches at times of unpredictability in the physiotherapy department and clinical environment.
- Participate in present and future development of services and pathways and contribute to specialist teaching and education for wider RHN professionals and external counterparts.
- Regularly participate in working parties developing service and policy changes within the designated clinical area which will impact on service users.
- Participate in the staff individual performance review as both appraiser and appraisee, taking specific responsibility for the Individual Performance Reviews of physiotherapists working in the designated clinical area.
- Be responsible for teaching student physiotherapists to graduate level and post graduate on physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge relevant to the service area.
- To engage in the active research culture at the RHN.
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential
- Qualification in Physiotherapy recognised by the Health Care Professions Council
- Registered member of the HCPC, membership of CSP or own public liability insurance
Desirable
- Completion of MSc or MSc level equivalent postgraduate training in relevant areas
Experience
Essential
- A significant period of experience at Band 6 or above in Neurology and/or Neuro-rehabilitation.
- Demonstrate the ability to competently carry out neurological assessment and treatment, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to establish patient-valued goals.
- Ability to prioritise and manage a large caseload, recognising boundaries, and seeking support when appropriate.
