Design Manager

Job Title: Design Manager – High-Rise Projects

Location: West Midlands

Reports To: Project Director / Head of Design

Job Brief

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Design Manager to lead the design delivery of complex high-rise residential and commercial developments. The ideal candidate will have a strong architectural or engineering background, a deep understanding of design coordination across disciplines, and a track record of managing design for tall buildings from concept through construction.

You’ll be the central figure bridging clients, consultants, and construction teams—ensuring that the design vision is realised while meeting regulatory, commercial, and buildability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end design process across all phases: concept, schematic, detailed design, and construction documentation.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including architects, structural and MEP engineers, façade consultants, and specialists.

  • Review and manage design deliverables, ensuring alignment with project scope, budget, and program.

  • Facilitate design reviews, manage RFIs, and resolve technical/design issues in a timely manner.

  • Liaise with authorities to ensure designs meet planning and code compliance.

  • Champion value engineering and constructibility without compromising design quality.

  • Monitor design progress, identify risks, and develop mitigation strategies.

  • Collaborate with construction teams to ensure smooth handover from design to delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • 5+ years of experience in design management, with a focus on high-rise buildings.

  • Strong understanding of building codes, local regulations, and construction practices.

  • Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks) and document management systems.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with Tier 1 developers or contractors.

  • Exposure to BIM implementation and clash detection workflows.
